Fast Five (2011)

Directed by: Justin Lin, Runtime: 2 hrs. 11 mins.

Starring: Vin Diesel, Paul Walker, Jordana Brewster, Dwayne Johnson, Tyrese Gibson, Ludacris, Gal Gadot, Sung Kang, Don Omar, Tego Calderon, Elsa Pataky, Michael Irby and Joaquim de Almeida

Dominic Toretto (Vin Diesel) assembles his crew once again- this time to pull off a massive heist in Rio de Janeiro. However, he has to do this with a powerful Brazilian drug lord and a persistent federal agent (Dwayne Johnson) hot on his heels.

Fast Five was truly a game changer for this saga. Dom’s crew has grown larger in size and characters from other movies in the franchise show up. There is the addition of Johnson’s formidable Agent Hobbs and the exotic locale also plays a factor in elevating the Fast franchise.

I really enjoyed the cast of the film. There is obviously a good rapport between the actual actors and that translates well on camera. Each of them are such integral parts of Dom’s crew/family and their individual strengths are explored a little more than in the past. For example, Dom describes Han as a “chameleon” because he blends into different environments easily. Han also plays a part in securing that infamous vault (more on that later).

After the dark turn Fast & Furious took it was nice to see that this one allowed for some light-hearted moments. A good example of this is when everyone finds out that Mia and Brian are expecting a baby. Even with the pressure of being on the run and fighting to pull of the dangerous job, the crew still finds time to celebrate and shower the couple with love.

Nothing compares to seeing the face-off between Toretto and Hobbs. Individually, Diesel and Johnson are both forces to be reckoned with so their onscreen rivalry is a highlight of Fast Five. I thought that Johnson was well cast; Hobbs is tough, smart and he always gets his mark. His whole purpose of being in Rio is to track Dom down and bring him in.

Similarly, Dom is determined not to go back to prison. This makes for an interesting power struggle between them and I found the scene where they knock each other through walls to be downright explosive!

The villain of Fast Five is the powerful drug lord Reyes (Joaquim de Almeida). He’s a corrupt businessman who has managed to take control of the lower income neighborhoods. Reyes has also bribed most of the city’s police- so much so that at one point in the movie, he moves his money to a police station where it can be well-guarded.

Perhaps the most action-filled moment of the movie is when Dom and Brian steal Reyes’ vault filled with millions of dollars and race through the busy streets of Rio destroying unimaginable amounts of property.

It. is. wild.
