Overboard (2018)

In this remake of the 1987 classic, Anna Farris and Eugenio Derbez star as Kate and Leonardo respectively, two polar opposites who come to despise one another. Kate is a single mother juggling multiple jobs with nursing school and Leonardo is the spoiled son of a billionaire who spends all of his time partying.

After a tipsy accident leaves the playboy with amnesia, Kate decides to get back at him by convincing his doctor that the two are happily married. High jinks, laughs and love ensue!

Farris and Derbez are so much fun to watch in these roles, especially the latter as he seems to thrive as both a dramatic actor and a comedic one. They are an unlikely pair, which makes their onscreen disdain for one another that much easier to believe.

When they first meet Leonardo is rude, condescending, and just an all-around jerk. His actions cause Kate to lose one of her many jobs so it’s understandable that she might be a little salty with him.

That she allows her friend Theresa (Eva Longoria) to talk her into this harebrained scheme is pretty silly, however it’s worth it to see Leo do humbling chores around “their” home.  Some of the most humorous scenes take place when Leo tries to cook dinner for the family or even better when he goes to his construction job and fails miserably.

I enjoyed how much Spanish was infused into the film. As someone who has been learning the language for awhile, it was cool to hear several characters speak in Spanish for full scenes. I thought that was a very natural and realistic touch, a route that I commend the director for taking. No need to worry if your Spanish is a little rusty, there are plenty of subtitles throughout the film! 😉

Much like the original in the 80s, Overboard tugs at all of your heart strings. It’s everything you want in a family-friendly comedy: lighthearted fun, silly gags and an unlikely relationship that’s just meant to be! Best of all it’s actually appropriate for the whole family to watch together.

The film is directed by Rob Greenberg (Cloudy With a Chance of Meatballs). He also serves as scribe alongside Bob Fisher (We’re the Millers), with story by Leslie DixonOverboard stars Anna Faris, Eugenio Derbez, Eva Longoria, Mel Rodriguez, John Hannah, Josh Segarra, Cecilia Suarez, Cynthia Mendez and Swoosie Kurtz. It’s probably still available in a theater close to you! If not, definitely look for it at RedBox or On Demand in the coming months.
