Maya (Jennifer Lopez) is a hard-working woman with her sights set on a major promotion at work. She’s got an undeniable knack for business and has been a dedicated
Wal-Mart superstore employee for years. Unfortunately, because she lacks a college education the job goes to someone else. Determined to prove that she has what it takes to be successful, Maya reinvents herself with a little help from her friends.
I really was hoping that J-Lo was getting back to her rom-com roots. She’s done lots of movies throughout her career, but my personal faves are films like The Wedding Planner and Maid in Manhattan. Unfortunately, Second Act really isn’t a rom-com, but it will likely make you laugh and forget about the worries of the day for a couple of hours.
With a heavily (and I do mean heavily) doctored resumé, Maya lands a job at a swanky marketing firm on the nice side of town. Vanessa Hudgens plays one of her co-workers who initially seems like an adversary, but gradually becomes a confidant and friend.
Then there’s Leah Remini, who is real life BFFS with Lopez. Seeing these two onscreen together was a lot of fun. They share an obvious chemistry and don’t hold back with the jokes or physical comedy.
The plot isn’t exactly exceptional, but the cast is great and the messages of believing in yourself and having the confidence to pursue your dreams hit all the right notes.
Second Act is currently in theaters. Be sure to check it out if you love Jenny from the block or want to spend an easy afternoon laughing with friends!
I’m still playing catch up with films from 2018. Have any favorites you think I should check out? Let me know in the comments down below!
