I have been a fan of Gugu Mbatha-Raw’s since I first saw her in Beyond the Lights in 2014. A handful of dazzling performances have followed in: Belle, Concussion, Free State of Jones, Miss Sloane and A Wrinkle in Time with a brief appearance in Beauty and the Beast . Mbatha-Raw is an incredible force of talent who doesn’t seem intimidated by any role. Her characters are all different and with every project she seems to diversify her portfolio even more. I’ve often wondered why more people aren’t talking about her. Well, that all might change with her soon to be released film Fast Color.
Directed by Julia Hart (who wrote the screenplay along with Jordan Horwitz), the film garnered quite the buzz after debuting at SXSW last year. It’s about a young woman named Ruth (Mbatha-Raw) who has superhuman abilities. Unable to hide them any longer, she flees her home in order to protect her loved ones, only to return years later seeking solace.

What sticks out to me the most is that very little is revealed in the two minute trailer. In an age when the entire plot is shown through a series of teasers, it’s rare to experience a little mystery. I’m anxious to see how this film stacks up and where I place it in my own personal canon. Is it similar to Josh Trank’s Chronicle? J.D. Dillard‘s Sleight? Is it something new and original altogether? It’s still too soon to tell, but you can bet I’m going to find out. Fast Color premieres in theaters March 29th!
Also stars Lorraine Toussaint, Saniyya Sidney, Christopher Denham, and Emmy winner David Strathairn.
