Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse

Miles Morales lives a pretty normal life until a mysterious spider bite leads to weird new abilities and his introduction to multiple “Spider-men” all from different dimensions. In order to get back home and set things right again, the unlikely crew must work together to defeat a common enemy.

The best part of this movie is definitely the creative animation and visual effects. Every scene looks like something straight out of a comic book. The music is also perfect for the setting; it’s upbeat, colorful, and youthful.

Miles is a great character with a lot of personality. He’s funny, imaginative, and has compassion for others. Many will be able to identify with him, be it his love for hip-hop or his pride in calling Brooklyn home. Shameik Moore (Dope) supplies the voice work and I think it was a perfect fit for him. He came across as extremely likable and down to earth, which of course make for the perfect superhero.

Another voice worth mentioning is Jake Johnson, who lends his talents as Peter B. Parker, an older, wiser version of the web-slinger from a different dimension. Johnson was undoubtedly well-cast and his character’s rapport with Miles really pushed the film forward. Everyone needs a mentor and while he starts out as a kind of “anti”-mentor, he really does help Miles find his way.

The other “Spider-people” are quite interesting as well; there’s Gwen Stacy (Hailee Steinfeld), Spider-Ham (John Mulaney), Peni Parker (Kimiko Glenn), and Spider-Man Noir (Nicolas Cage). Each have their own unique origin stories and colorful personalities that add to the already funny dialogue.

Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse is everything a superhero fan can really hope for. It’s stylish, bold and charming, all of which earned its Oscar nomination** for Best Animated Feature Film. IMHO they are a shoo-in! If you haven’t seen it yet what are you waiting for? Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse is still playing in many theaters. Check it out for yourself!

**update as of 2/24/19, the picture did in fact win the Academy Award for Best Animated Feature
