Live-Action Aladdin Trailer

The first full length trailer for Disney‘s highly anticipated live-action Aladdin dropped this morning. Check it out for yourself below:

For a movie that’s still months away from a premiere, Aladdin has already had its fair share of controversies. First, folks were up in arms over the casting of Princess Jasmine, arguing that actress Naomi Scott (who has an English father and Indian mother) is not “brown enough”. Then it was the creation of a brand new role for Billy Magunussen, a white American actor. More recently, people lambasted Will Smith himself for the blue hue he was seen sporting in a teaser that dropped during the Grammys.

I must admit that I’ve had my own personal reservations from the moment Disney announced they were giving these characters the live-action treatment. Aladdin means a lot to me. It’s one of the first movies that I  remember watching as a child and it has always had a special place in my personal movie canon. The trailer manages to alleviate some of my previous concerns. The familiar score sounds as great as always,  and visually, it already looks like quite a grand spectacle.

While I do wish some classics could remain off-limits, I have learned to separate originals from adaptations. I think that’s the only thing you can do in order to retain your sanity in this age of remakes and reboots.

Whether you want it or not, Disney’s Aladdin will be in theaters May 24, 2019.

    1. I personally wish they would’ve left it alone altogether. I’m not super hopeful, but I plan on seeing this through. This whole circus actually makes me more nervous for other upcoming live-actions…Mulan in particular.
